India and USA military recently conducted the TARKASHA exercise. It was held in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Special Operation Forces of the US and the National Security Guard of India participated in the exercise. Usually, military exercises focus on enhancing the skills and weapon usage of the soldiers. In a unique way, this exercise focused on CBRN TERROR RESPONSE. CBRN means Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear.

What are CBRN terror responses?

The training and strategies used against CBRN are called CBRN terror response. The CBRN weapons cause mass destruction. One of the recent CBRN usages was in Syria in 2017. Sarin gas was used to attack and the gas killed more than 100.

Why is CBRN coming up?

It is believed that the exercise was launched against the backdrop of the Ukraine war. In 2022, a chemical attack was done in the Kharkiv region, a Ukraine-Russia war-prone zone. Both countries are blaming each other for the incident.

Need for CBRN response

CBRN war methods are increasing. When terrorists and enemy countries are unable to fight directly, they use CBRN war tactics. For instance, chemical weapons like mustard gases were used. There are biological weapons like Anthrax. It is believed that even COVID virus was one such biological weapon used by China against its economic rivalries.
