Cabinet approves construction of Kartarpur corridor in Gurdaspur district to International Border
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired Union Cabinet has approved building and development of Kartarpur Corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab to international border with Pakistan. It was approved as part of 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, which falls in 2019.
Kartarpur
It is located in Shakargarh in Narowal district of Punjab province of Pakistan. Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism and its first guru had spent over 18 years of his life here. Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara is located about three to 4km from Indo-Pak border in Pakistan in Punjab.
Kartarpur corridor
It will facilitate pilgrims from India who visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur, on the banks of the Ravi River in Pakistan every year. It was first proposed by then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999. If connected on both sides, this could also provide major boost to religious tourism as more pilgrims will be able to visit holy shrine throughout year.
It will be implemented as integrated development project with Centre government’s funding. Central Government will put in place suitable facilities for smooth passage of pilgrims. It will also urge Pakistan Government to “recognise the sentiments of the Sikh community, and develop a corridor with suitable facilities in their territory as well.
