Bihar Bird Sanctuaries Gain International Ramsar Status
The Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries in Bihar were recently named wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. This shows that India is serious about protecting wetlands. With this addition, India now has 82 Ramsar sites, which is a big step forward in the country’s efforts to protect the environment.
Introduction to Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries
The Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries are in the Jamui district of Bihar. They were first made by people as ponds for irrigation. Over time, these marshes have become important places for many kinds of plants and animals to live, especially bird species, some of which are in danger of going extinct. It covers 791 hectares and 333 hectares, and there are dry deciduous woods and hills all around them.
Significance of Ramsar Designation
The Ramsar Convention was created in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. Its goal is to protect natural areas that are important to people all over the world. The fact that the Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries are on this list shows how important they are for the environment, not only for wildlife but also for meeting local water needs and giving people a place to play. The title is meant to help with conservation efforts and bring attention to these important ecosystems.
Ecological and Social Impacts
Over 150 kinds of birds, mammals, fish, and aquatic plants live in the sanctuaries, and they are very important to the winter migration patterns of many birds. Every year, these wetlands are home to more than 20,000 migratory birds. Among them are the endangered Indian elephant and a vulnerable local catfish species. In addition, the preserves meet the water needs of local farms and homes and have become popular places to watch birds.
