Bangladesh celebrates 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
On March 17, 2020, Bangladesh celebrated 100th birth anniversary of “Jatir Pita” Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. PM Modi participated in the celebrations through video conferencing.
Bangabandhu: Political Career
Sheikh Mujbur Rahman was a Bangladeshi politician. He is called the father of Bangladesh. He was the first president of Bangladesh and later he served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh between 1971 and 1975. He was assassinated in 1975.
1970 Election
At the 1970 election held in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Awami League party under the leadership of Bangabandhu won the elections. The Central Government under the leadership of Pakistan People’s Party headed by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto hesitated to provide greater autonomy and other demands of Bangabandhu. This was the base for the 1971 war where India joined hands with Bangladesh.
Literature
Bangabandhu wrote two volumes of his autobiography. The books were published by his daughter, the now Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina after his death.
