August 23: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition observed
The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition has been observed on 23rd August by UNESCO. The Member States of UNESCO organizes the events every year on the date, inviting young people, educators, artists, and intellectuals for participation.
What is the significance of the day?
- The purpose of celebrating this day is to remember the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all.
- Analyzing the reciprocation in line with “The Slave Route” project regarding the facts that provoked the issues between Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, considering the historic causes, methods, consequences of this tragedy.
- The day was first celebrated in Haiti in 1998.
What is the Slave Route Project?
It is an initiative of UNESCO, launched in 1994 that seeks to strengthen the understanding of history and heritage from the global tragedy of slavery and the slave trade. It also promotes reconciliation and cooperation among peoples.
