August 16: Parsi New year 2022
The Parsi New Year is observed in the month of July or August. It is commonly called as Navroz. It is celebrated by Parsi community according to dates of Shahenshahi calendar. In year 2022, Navroz is being observed on August 16.
About Navroz:
- Navroz has derived its name from two word, viz., ‘Nav’ and ‘Roz’. In English, it means “New Day”.
- This day is commonly celebrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa since, most of the Parsi population lives in these states.
- To celebrate the day, people prepare traditional Parsi cuisine. They sing, dance and enter into the new year with enthusiasm.
- In Zoroastrian calendar, this day is celebrated on first day of the first month of Farvardin.
- Spring Equinox, that is observed on March 21, symbolises the start of the season.
History of Navroz:
The origin of Navroz lies between 3,500 and 3,000 BCE. During this period, Zoroastrianism was set up by Prophet Zarathustra in present-day Iran. Among the followers of Zoroastrian philosophy, this day is regarded as the time when everything in universe is renewed. The term Navroz is associated with Jamshed, who introduced the Parsi calendar for the first time. He was a monarch of ancient Sasanian empire. Navroz is also called as Jamshed-i-Nouroz.
