August 12: International Youth Day

The International Youth Day is observed every year on August 12. The day celebrates the contribution of today’s youth in development of society. It also calls out against injustice faced by the youth across the world considering that, youth are leaders of tomorrow and they have potential to bring huge changes in society.

Theme of the Day 2022:

  • The International Youth Day 2022 was observed under the theme: “Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages.”
  • The International Youth Day 2022 was observed with the objective of louden the message that; all generations need to take action in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

History of the Day:

The first International Youth Day was celebrated on August 12, 2000. Since 2000, this day is being observed to educate general citizens. UN General Assembly established on the recommendation of “World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth” on December 17, 1999. It adopted the Resolution 54/120 to designate this day.

National Youth Day:

In India, National Youth Day is celebrated every year on January 12, on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Government designated this day in 1984.
