Auction of 122 Coal and Lignite Mines

An auction of 122 Coal and Lignite Mines including 18 New Mines has been launched by the Ministry of Coal.

Overview:

  • As of now, 42 coal mines have already been auctioned by the ministry.
  • The auctioning off of the mines will ensure the energy security of the country and will also be providing employment opportunities to more than one lakh 17 thousand citizens of the nation.
  • This sector is being reformed by the Coal Ministry.
  • The recent reforms have been done keeping in mind the government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Details of the mines

Under different tranches that have been made for the auction of the mines the details of the mines are:

Under the 5th Tranche of Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, 1957, and the 15th Tranche of Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 there are 109 coal mines. Out of these 109 mines that are on offer, 50 are mines that are partially explored and 59 are mines that are fully explored.

Under the Second Attempt of the 4th Tranche of Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, 1957, and the second attempt of the 14th Tranche of Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 four mines have been placed.

Under the Second Attempt of the 3rd Tranche of Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, 1957, and the second attempt of the 13th Tranche of Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 a total of 9 coal mines are placed.

The key features of the auction process

The key features include the National Coal Index introduction, full flexibility in coal utilization, ease in participation and there is no restriction for having any prior coal mining experience, optimized payment structures, use of clean coal-related technology, and promotion of efficiency through various incentives for early production.
