Jayant Naralikar Receives the First Award

Jayant Naralikar, a distinguished figure in Indian astronomy, was the recipient of the inaugural Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award. Despite being unable to attend the 41st meeting of the ASI in Indore earlier this year, Naralikar was personally presented with the award by ASI President Dipankar Banerjee in Pune.

Founding Director of IUCAA and Pioneering Cosmology Research

Naralikar’s influential role in the field of astronomy is highlighted by his position as the founding director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). He played a crucial role in initiating cosmology research in India, contributing significantly to the understanding of the universe and its various phenomena.

Paying Tribute to Prof. Govind Swarup

The Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award is named in honor of the late Prof. Govind Swarup, who is widely regarded as the pioneer of radio astronomy in India. Swarup, the founding director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), led groundbreaking projects such as the Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). His vision and commitment were instrumental in the advancement of radio astronomy in the country.

Prof. Govind Swarup was not only known for his significant contributions to radio astronomy but also for his strong support of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project.
