Ashleigh Barty named 2019 WTA Player of the Year
The 23 years old Australian, Ashleigh Barty has been voted as the WTA player of the year after reaching the top of the world women’s tennis association’s (WTA) ranking capturing her maiden grand slam singles title. Ashleigh Barty, the 2019 French Open winner, garnered 82 percent of the media votes to beat other 2019 grand slam winners Simona Halep(Wimbledon), Naomi Osaka(Australian Open), Bianca Andreescu (US Open).
Ashleigh Barty quit tennis in 2014 to play cricket before returning to the game of tennis in 2016. She defeated Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova 6-1,6-3 in straight sets in the finals of the women’s single French open 2019.
She is currently ranked no.1 in the world in women’s singles ranking by the women’s tennis association(WTA).
