Artificial Islands Forming at Pudukottai’s Kavinadu Kanmoi

A big environmental project has started at Kavinadu Kanmoi, one of the biggest irrigation tanks in Pudukottai district, Tamil Nadu. It is being run by the Pudukottai district government and the Kadamadai Area Integrated Farmers Association (KAIFA). The main goal of this project is to make artificial islands inside the tank.

Construction of Artificial Islands

The project plans call for building 10 man-made islands. The cleaned silt will be used to make these islands, which will be about 10 feet above the tank bed. By planting fruit-bearing and native trees on these new buildings, the main goal of these islands is to protect local biodiversity, especially bird species.

Initial Steps and Environmental Cleanup

An invasive weed called seemai karuvelam (prosopis juliflora) had to be removed from the tank area before the job could begin. Law Minister S. Regupathy, Environment Minister Siva V. Meyyanathan, and District Collector I.S. Mercy Ramya were among the important people in the area who attended the official start of the cleanup operation. After this plant matter is gone, silt will be taken out of the tank bed as the next step.

Long-term Environmental Benefits

Not only will getting rid of invasive species and silt help restore the native habitat, but it will also make Kavinadu Kanmoi much better at managing and storing water. These changes are necessary to keep farming going in the area and to protect the local wildlife. The ultimate goal of this project is to make the ecosystem inside the irrigation tank sustainable and ecologically balanced so that it helps both nature and people.
