Army Allows Specialized Lt Cols to Skip Command Roles
The Indian Army is bringing a new policy to let some officers stay longer in their specialty field. Normally, Lieutenant Colonels who are promoted to Colonel must change roles to command assignments. But the new rules let these officers keep working in their expertise area if they want.
Applying to Key Technology Areas
The policy applies to Colonels specializing in key areas like artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, space, IT, weapons, and more. It lets about 30-40% of promoted Lieutenant Colonels choose to skip command posts. Instead, they can stay as Colonels in their specialty for 2 more years.
Boosting Army’s Domain Knowledge
The goal is for the Army to build deeper domain knowledge. By retaining expert Colonels longer, their skills and experience stay with their teams. But these officers lose career progression opportunities later.
Giving Up Command Roles
Colonels who stay in specialty areas have to give up typical command roles that lead to senior command courses. After 2 years, a board reviews if they get a specialty extension. If not, they take other Colonel staff jobs.
Balancing Merit and Specialization
Only qualified Lieutenant Colonels make Colonel based on merit, ensuring specialized teams have strong leaders. While this limits future promotions for individuals, it meets the Army’s overall need for expertise.
Addressing Specialist Shortages
Earlier, officers leaving specialties too fast created skill gaps in key tech areas. This policy tackles that by retaining talent longer in selected domains. The rules will be reviewed in 3 years to judge their impact.
The aim is balancing individual career growth with building niche capability that strengthens the Army overall. Retaining expert Colonels longer in key fields does this while promoting based on merit.
