April 23: English Language Day; Spanish Language Day
Every year, April 23 is celebrated as English Language Day. The Spanish Language Day is celebrated on the same day as well. English is one of the two working languages of the United Nations. The Day is also celebrated as World Book Day.
Highlights
The Day is celebrated as English Language Day to observe both birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare. The day is an initiative by the Department of Global Communications. Language Days are observed for each of the six official languages of the UN.
The six official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, English, Chinese, Spanish and Russian.
