APAAR: ‘One Nation, One Student ID’
The Union Education Ministry has recently advised all states to implement the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR), also known as the ‘One Nation, One Student ID.’ This move aims to create a seamless educational ecosystem and facilitate better tracking of students’ academic journeys and achievements.
What is APAAR?
- APAAR stands for the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry, also known as ‘One Nation, One Student ID.’
- It is an Education Ecosystem Registry or an ‘EduLocker.’
- The National Educational Technology Forum (NETF) under the Ministry of Education initiated the concept to create a comprehensive educational ecosystem registry that includes students, teachers, schools, and colleges.
Purpose of APAAR
- NETF, established under the NEP 2020, focuses on technology-based interventions in education.
- APAAR provides each student from pre-primary to higher education with a unique identification number, in addition to the existing Aadhaar ID.
- It aims to streamline and digitize the academic journey and achievements of students, making it easier for them to access their records.
Benefits of ‘One Nation, One ID’ for Students
- Lifelong ID for seamless tracking of academic progress and accomplishments.
- Digital storage of exam results, learning outcomes, co-curricular achievements, and specialized skill training.
- Simplified admission process for students transferring between schools or institutions anywhere in the country.
Enrollment Process
- Schools will be responsible for the enrollment process with the consent of parents.
- Parents have the option to withdraw their consent at any time.
- Data will be shared with government agencies only when necessary.
- Student data will be stored centrally in the District Information for Education portal.
Challenges and Concerns
- Data Security: Given concerns about data security, especially after Aadhaar-related data breaches, there are apprehensions about the security of APAAR data.
- Administrative Burden: Schools worry about the increased administrative workload, especially when Aadhaar verification is still pending for some students.
- Privacy Concerns: Some individuals may raise privacy concerns regarding the collection and storage of students’ data.
