Anti-Microbial Coating Technology approved by DST
The Department of Science and Technology recently approved anti-microbial coating developed by Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).
What is Anti-Microbial Coating
The anti-microbial coating can be applied or fabricated into surfaces such as textiles, plastics, etc. The coating kills the microbes as they come in contact to it. This includes fungus, bacteria, viruses like influenza virus, COVID-19, etc. The technology is first of its kind.
Significance
The coating is to be used in PPEs (Personal Protection Equipment) such as gowns, face shields, gloves used by health care personnel.
Benefits
The Compound developed through the technology is soluble in several solvents such as plastics, textiles, PVC, polystyrene, polyurethane. This eases the use of the compound. The coating kills the microbes within 30 minutes of contact. The microbes get killed as the coating disrupts the membranes of the pathogens.
The technology adopted to prepare the compound is simple and hence less time consuming. It involves three to four steps with easy purification processes.
