Amrut Biodiversity Park
The Amrut Biodiversity Park was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena in 2025. Located along NH-24 in the Yamuna floodplains, this park spans 90 hectares. It is part of the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) initiative to restore and rejuvenate the floodplain ecosystem. The park aims to enhance green spaces in Delhi while promoting environmental awareness.
Restoration of Ecosystem
The park was previously agricultural land and settlements. Its transformation involved creating six water bodies with a capacity of 225 million litres. These water bodies manage stormwater and mitigate flood risks. The park’s design includes jute-reinforced slopes and riverine grass communities. These features stabilise the flood-prone land and enhance groundwater recharge.
Biodiversity Enhancement
A aspect of the park is the planting of diverse species. Approximately 14,500 trees, including Neem, Peepal, and Mango, were planted. Additionally, 18,000 shrubs and over 3.21 lakh riverine grasses were introduced. This biodiversity aims to attract various bird species and create a vibrant ecosystem.
Public Interaction Spaces
To encourage public engagement, the park includes two public spaces along NH-24. These areas are designed for visitors to connect with nature. The park’s theme is centred around India’s freedom struggle, featuring tracks named after events like the Dandi March and the First War of Independence.
Hydrology and Water Management
The park’s hydrology has been restored by dredging existing catchments. This process allows for the effective management of water flow during monsoon seasons. The DDA aims to ensure that water bodies remain visible and functional, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.
Environmental Concerns
Despite its benefits, the project has faced criticism from environmental activists. Concerns have been raised about the site’s flood-prone nature and its financial viability. Critics argue that the area is prone to inundation during monsoon seasons. The DDA, however, remains optimistic about the park’s potential to thrive and provide a green space for Delhi residents.
Future Developments
Plans for the park include the establishment of a café for visitors. This addition aims to enhance the recreational experience for joggers and nature enthusiasts. The park is envisioned as a space for relaxation and connection with nature in the bustling city.
