Indian Railways to Redevelop 61 Stations in Karnataka Under ABSS
Recently, Indian Railways has chosen 61 railway stations in Karnataka for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This project aims to modernize and improve the facilities at these stations. The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is initiative by Indian Railways aimed at modernising railway stations across India. The initiative addresses the need for improved infrastructure, passenger amenities, and sustainable solutions at railway stations.
Objectives of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
- Launched in February 2023, this scheme focuses on the redevelopment of 1,309 railway stations.
- Its primary aim is to enhance the quality of railway stations.
- This includes creating master plans for each station and implementing them in phases.
- The scheme focuses on improving passenger amenities, traffic circulation, and inter-modal connectivity.
- It seeks to transform stations into modern hubs that cater to the needs of all passengers, including those with disabilities.
Key Features of the Scheme
ABSS incorporates several key features. Modern passenger amenities will be provided, including clean waiting areas, restrooms, and food outlets. There will be improved traffic circulation with separate entry and exit points, wider roads, and adequate parking. The scheme also emphasises inter-modal integration, ensuring seamless connectivity between railway stations and other transport modes. Upgraded signage in multiple languages will guide passengers effectively.
Structural Improvements and Sustainability
The scheme includes structural enhancements to station buildings and the introduction of ballastless tracks. These tracks reduce noise and vibration, contributing to a better travel experience. The initiative also prioritises sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient lighting, rainwater harvesting systems, and green spaces. Roof plazas may be constructed where feasible, providing additional commercial space.
Project Implementation and Funding
The implementation of ABSS is complex, requiring various statutory clearances. This complexity affects project timelines. Funding for passenger amenities falls under Plan Head – 53 ‘Customer Amenities’, managed by different railway zones. In Karnataka, the total estimated cost for the redevelopment of railway stations is ₹2,000 crore.
Recent Developments in Karnataka
In Karnataka, 15 railway stations in the Bengaluru Division are set for redevelopment, including Bangarpet and Whitefield. Additionally, 13 stations have been earmarked for rejuvenation, transforming them into urban icons. These stations will feature shopping zones, food courts, and facilities for the physically challenged, aiming to become socio-economic activity centres.
