Alok Kumar Verma takes charge as Delhi Police Commissioner

Senior IPS Officer Alok Kumar Verma has taken charge of new Police Commissioner of Delhi on February 29, 2016. He has replaced B. S. Bassi. His appointment was cleared by Union Home Ministry on February 17 and was sent to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung for issuing the appointment order.

About Alok Kumar Verma

• Verma, 58, is a senior IPS officer from 1979-batch Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre.
• Before taking charge as Delhi Police Commissioner, he was serving as Director General (Prisons). He has been on crucial posts such as DCP (south and north east Delhi), Joint Commissioner of New Delhi Range, Crime Branch as Joint CP, DG Mizoram etc.

Constitution of India has special provisions regarding the administration of Union territory of Delhi under article 239AA as inserted by Constitution 69th Amendment Act 1991. As per this article, legislative assembly of Delhi can make laws for whole or part of the NCT of Delhi on all subjects in the State List or Concurrent List except Public Order, Police and Land. Due to this, Delhi Police comes under Union Home Ministry while Delhi Development Authority comes under Union Urban Development Ministry. The police commissioner of Delhi reports to the lieutenant governor in Delhi.
