Al-Hamid rescued by INS ‘Sumedha’

A traditional wooden vessel called dhow named Al-Hamid, comprising of 13 Indian Citizens, was in distress and floating slowly near the coast of Somalia, Gulf of Aden. On 6th January 2020, Indian Navy Ship Sumedha, currently on an Anti Piracy Patrol in the Gulf of Aden, came to the rescue of the crew as Al-Hamid, which was detected by an Indian Navy Helicopter launched from the deck of Indian Navy Ship Sumedha.

A Naval technical team along with the boarding team took off Al-Hamid for routine checks onboard and provided assistance & disclosed that the Dhow had undergone a broken main engine shaft which could not be repaired at sea. Then the dhow was pulled away to safety from the Somali coast.

For repair purposes, the owner of the dhow Al-Hamid sent another vessel for pulling away from the dhow to port. Before leaving, Indian Naval Ship Sumedha supplied medical stock and freshwater to the crew of the dhow Al-Hamid.
