Afghanistan President issues decree to extend mandate of present Parliament
Afghanistan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has issued a decree to extend the mandate of present Parliament which expires on 22 June 2015.
President Ghani had taken this decision in consultation with the judiciary, the legislative and the executive.
With the issuing of decree, current Afghan Parliament now can continue to function until voting take place for the parliamentary elections. The dated for elections to elect new Parliament will be announced later in end of June 2015.
The parliamentary elections of Afghanistan were scheduled in April 2015. However due to security reasons and disagreement on how to conduct a free and fair voting it was delayed.
It should be also noted that during 2014 presidential elections, both Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah had claimed victory in the election which marred by accusations of widespread fraud on both sides.
Later, after the intervention of United States both of them agreed to form a unity government. After this deal Ashraf Ghani was chosen as President and Abdullah as Chief Executive.
