Automated & Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) System

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) is enhancing the efficiency of National Highway projects through Automated & Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) systems, which aim to tackle ongoing delays in project completion, with real-time updates and data sharing among stakeholders.

AIMC Overview

AIMC systems utilize advanced technology to improve road construction. They provide real-time updates on progress and facilitate simultaneous surveys. This approach allows for better communication among stakeholders, including MoRTH and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

International Benchmarking

MoRTH has researched AIMC systems used in the US, Norway, and the European Union. This study informs the development of India’s strategy for implementing similar technologies. The goal is to enhance road quality and ensure timely project completion.

On March 2024, 419 out of 952 National Highway projects have missed deadlines. Common issues include outdated technology and inadequate contractor performance. AIMC aims to address these challenges by introducing innovative machinery.

Pilot Testing in India

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway is the site of AIMC pilot testing. The project employs GPS-aided motor graders, intelligent compactors, and stringless pavers. These machines enable real-time data transmission and simultaneous construction activities.

Key Technologies

GPS-aided motor graders enhance precision during construction. Intelligent compactors ensure durability by reducing air pockets and moisture in materials. These technologies are crucial for improving the longevity and quality of roads.

India’s National Highway network spans 1.46 lakh km, with plans to expand by 45,000 km by 2047. The successful implementation of AIMC systems is expected to boost construction efficiency and quality across the country.
