Adani’s Sri Lankan Wind Energy Project Challenged In Supreme Court

Adani Green Energy started a big $442 million wind power project in the northern areas of Mannar and Pooneryn. In February 2023, the Sri Lankan Board of Investment gave its approval. Sri Lanka’s goals for renewable energy have taken a big step forward with this, but there are worries about the possible effects on the environment and the lack of transparency.

Legal Challenges and Environmental Concerns

A well-known Sri Lankan conservation group called the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) filed a Fundamental Rights petition with the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on May 16. The main thing that worries them about this project is how it might hurt Mannar Island’s unique and diverse wildlife. WNPS says the project’s position is very important because it is at the southernmost point of the Central Asian Flyway, which is a major migration route for many bird species and home to many native water birds and bats.

Transparency and Assessment Issues

The petition was concerned about how opaque the project’s approval process seemed to be. It also questioned how the project was being portrayed as a government-to-government effort with India without giving any information about the money or terms. There were also worries about the reliability of the Environmental Impact Assessment done by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Sri Lanka, which pointed to possible flaws in the assessment of the environmental effects.

Economic Aspects and Power Pricing

Sri Lanka decided to pay $0.0826 per kWh for the electricity that this project would make. This deal is a step in the right direction toward adding green energy sources to the national grid, but the pricing and economic effects on Sri Lanka have been closely looked at, especially since the country has been having recent economic problems.

More About Adani Green Energy’s wind energy project

Adani Green Energy, which is part of the Adani Group, wants to have 45 gigawatts of green energy by 2030. Their project to use wind energy includes a large amount of hybrid energy production capacity that uses the best parts of both to make it more reliable and efficient. Adani Green won one of the biggest solar bids in the world, $6 billion for an 8-gigawatt project from SECI. They also formed a partnership with TotalEnergies SE, which was a smart move toward expanding their use of clean energy around the world. India’s goal of having 450 GW of renewable energy potential by 2030 is helped by Adani’s dedication to renewable energy.
