On 10 August, during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris, Abhinav Bindra, the iconic Indian shooter and first individual Olympic gold medalist from India, will be awarded the Olympic Order for his significant contributions to the Olympic Movement. This ceremony is scheduled one day prior to the commencement of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games.

The Olympic Order

The Olympic Order will be presented to the legendary Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra, the country’s first individual Olympic gold medal winner, during the 142nd International Olympic Committee Session in Paris on August 10th in recognition of his outstanding service to the Olympic Movement. This event is set to take place the day before the 33rd Summer Olympics begin.

Nominations and Selection

Recognizing outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the Olympic Movement, the Olympic Order is the highest award given by the International Olympic Committee. It is bestowed upon those who have made a substantial influence on sports or who embody the Olympic values by their deeds. The Olympic Orders Council proposes candidates for the Order, and the IOC Executive Board makes the final decision. This guarantees that those who have made exceptional contributions to the Olympic cause are recognized thoroughly and officially.

Abhinav Bindra’s Achievements

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Bindra won the men’s 10m air rifle event, becoming India’s first ever individual Olympic gold medalist. Beyond his athletic achievements, he leaves an indelible mark as a member of numerous esteemed groups, such as the IOC Athlete Commission and the International Shooting Sport Federation Athlete Committee.

About Olympic Order

In recognition of exceptional service to the Olympic cause, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) bestows the Olympic Order. In 1974, it came into being. Awardees are given a diploma, a framed certificate, and a badge. Grand Cross, Commander, and Member are the three tiers that make up the Order. Athletes aren’t the only ones who get recognition; leaders and volunteers do as well. The Grand Cross is an honor bestowed upon few, usually in recognition of extraordinary service. It symbolizes unity, friendship, and excellence in sports and is distinct from medals awarded in competitions.
