A large part of Mumbai went under blanket darkness: Power Failure

India’s heart-throb and financial capital Mumbai came to a standstill by a massive power cut which hit a large part of Central and suburban parts. Tata Power, the utility company, suffered a big technical snag at its plant at Trombay, pushing thousands of homes and small and medium businesses into darkness.
The line of cuts started at 9.45am when the power station’s unit 5, with a generation capacity of 500MW, tripped, forcing Tata Power to switch off power. In a ripple-effect, the consumers of the state-run BEST, which draws its entire supply from Tata Power, in the island city were plunged into darkness. Finally taking the shots, Reliance Infra, whose distribution system is linked with Tata Power’s transmission system, was driven to initiate rotational load-shedding in its areas in the western suburbs.
Such outrageous disruption left about 2-3 lakh consumers without family the entire day. Power failure in cities like Mumbai spell much more problems than can be seen in small cities. Everyone from offices, homes, hospitals, courts were brought to a ground halt. The residents of high-rise buildings were jammed and forced to stay back due to stoppage of lifts. High humidity in the air made conditions worse for many others.
“Dark office in Mumbai. Lights out in the whole area. The coal crisis is beginning to literally show its dark side. A threat to the India story,” tweeted Mumbai-based industrialist Anand Mahindra.
Power cuts are a common occurrence to Indian way of life because of a fundamental shortage of power and an ageing grid and increasing load.
