In order to Check Cow Slaughter in State, Gujarat Assembly Passes Bill

  • Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill 2011
  • Objective: To stop/discourage Cow Slaughter, 7-year jail term for cow slaughter or even transporting the animal for that purpose
  • Due to the presence of some loopholes in the current law in Gujarat, which bans the slaughter of milch cattle below the age of 16 years, some cows are still slaughtered
  • As per the provisions of Gujarat Animal Preservation Act (GAPA) 1954, in spite of ban on cow slaughter is there, there is no provision in the Act to prevent transportation of the animal for slaughter
  • There had been a strong demand from the Maldharis (Pastoral People)  in Gujarat for stricter laws against cow slaughter and trade of beef

Extradition of Under World Don Abu Salem cancelled by the Portuguese High Court

  • Cancellation of extradition of underworld Don Abu Salem was ordered by Portuguese High Court ordered for violation of agreement by India for slapping criminal offenses which draw death penalty
  • Portugese court held that in observation of the fresh charges against Salem which demand death penalty, the authorization approved for his extradition has been terminated

India beats Pakistan to lift Asian Kabaddi Title

  • Indian Kabaddi team beat Pakistan to lift its first-ever Circle Style Asian Kabaddi title at Tabriz in Iran
  • This was the first time that the championship was played outside India
  • 8 nations participated in the championship
  • Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who popularized the conventional game at international level, cited that the Asia Cup was a trailer of the 2nd World Cup, to be held in the state of Punjab from November 1, 2011

No commercials, unwanted SMS from today

  • Telecom Users all over India will now be eased from unwelcome commercial calls and messages
  • Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations 2010 was formally inaugurated by Kapil Sibal, Communications and Information Technology Minister
  • The regulations will facilitate consumers to list themselves on the National Consumer Preference Register, NCPR by merely dialling 1909 or sending an SMS to this number
  • Under the new regulations, telemarketers will also have to list themselves on the NCPR website
  • Heavy fines to be forced on telemarketers transferring unwelcome calls to registered customers
  • TRAI’s guidelines confining the number of SMSes sent per day to 100 by private mobile phone numbers also comes into force
  • Restrictions to guard consumers from unregistered telemarketers
  • But some categories are exempted from these restrictions which include transactional messsages related to banking operations, educational institutions and the like
