Typhoon Talas (international designation: 1112, JTWC designation: 15W) was an unusually large but weak tropical cyclone that caused many deaths and severe damage to Japan. It was the 12th named storm, the 7th severe tropical storm and the 5th typhoon of the 2011 Pacific typhoon season. This is the first time that the number of dead or missing individuals following a typhoon in Japan has exceeded 100 since Typhoon Tip in 1979. The word Talas is a Filipino word meaning sharpness.2] It followed five months after Japan was hit by a large tsunami. |
