Peter Thomson, Fiji’s ambassador to the United Nations, has been elected as the new President of the 71st session of United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 71). He will replace current General Assembly President Mogens Lykketoft and will begin his tenure in September 2016 at the commencement of the UNGA 71. With this, Thomson will become the first representative of the Small Islands and Developing States (SIDS) group to hold the position. Thomson will oversee the process of searching for a new U.N. secretary-general to replace Ban Ki-moon of South Korea, who will finish his second five-year term in the post at the end of 2016.
