Tennis: US OPEN Results
Men’s Singles
Novak Djokovic (Serbia). He is the 6th man in the Open Era to win 3 Grand Slam titles in the same year. Djokovic joined Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova and Manuel Orantes as the sixth player to hoist the U.S. Open trophy after facing match point at some point earlier in the tournament.
Women’s Singles
Samantha Stosur (Australia). She became the first Australian woman to win the US Open since Margaret Court in 1973, and first to win the Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980.

Lt. Colonel Rank to Indian Captain MS Dhoni & Gold Medallist Shooter Abhinav Bindra
- Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Olympic gold medallist shooter Abhinav Bindra were
conferred with the rank of honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army by the President
- The honour was conferred on Dhoni and Bindra for their special contribution in the field of cricket and shooting respectively, and their dedication to the Army on diverse occasions
- Dhoni led India to World Cup victory in 2011 and was instrumental in taking the team to the No 1 spot in Test rankings for the first time ever
- Bindra had won the only individual Olympic gold medal for India at the Beijing Olympics in 2008
- Bindra and Dhoni joined the ranks of senior cricketers Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar who have been conferred with honorary ranks in the armed forces
- Kapil Dev is an Honorary Lt. Colonel in the Territorial Army, while Tendulkar is an honorary Group Captain in the Indian Air Force
- The Defence Ministry has also cleared a proposal to fly Dhoni and Tendulkar in IAF’s frontline Su-30MKI air superiority fighter aircraft at the Lohegaon airbase
Miss Universe 2011: Leila Lopes from Angola
- Leila Lopes from Angola was crowned Miss Universe in Sau Paulo, Brazil
- Lopes was earlier crowned Miss Angola UK on 8 October 2010, the official representative of the Angolan community in the UK to the 2011 Miss Angola pageant
- The 1st runner-up was Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine and the 2nd runner-up was Priscila Machado of Brazil
30,000 jobs to be cut by the Bank of America
- Bank of America to slice 30,000 jobs in the times to come as part of a cost-cutting plan
- This stands for about 10% of the company’s employees
- BoA desires to save about $ 5 bn dollars a year by this. The bank that was punched hard by the sub-prime mortgage crisis
- The cuts came on the day that President Barack Obama sent his $ 447 billion jobs Bill to Congress, his effort to decrease the intensity of joblessness
India inked pact with UAE for welfare of India’s manpower working in UAE
- India signed a pact with UAE for the wellbeing of Indian manpower working in UAE
- The pact renders for the methods for employment of workers, their tasks and regulations of the host country to be followed
- Around 17.5 Lakh Indians are operational in UAE and their yearly payment is approximately five $ 5 bn
- The investment from UAE in India is $ 44 bn and the trade is valued at $ 180 mn
