Government launches UMMID initiative and NIDAN in health sector
Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr. Harsh Vardhan has launched two initiatives to tackle the menace of genetic diseases in newborns. These are:
- The Unique Methods of Management and treatment of Inherited Disorders (UMMID) initiative
- National Inherited Diseases Administration (NIDAN)
Both of these initiates of Health Ministry are supported by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology.
The objective of UMMID initiative is to make treatment of expensive genetic diseases in newborns within reach of all people. The NIDAN kendras are to be established under the UMMID initiative. These centres will provide counselling, prenatal testing / diagnosis and management in government hospitals of the country. Another objective is to produce skilled technicians in Human genetics to screen pregnant women and newborn babies for inherited genetic diseases. The initiative has been launched and five NIDAN kendras have been already established.
