NAC re-constituted, tribal expert Virginius Xaxa replaces Aruna Roy
Union Government has restructured the National Advisory Council by inducting eminent sociologist Virginius Xaxa into the 12-member panel headed by Sonia Gandhi. Xaxa is a Professor at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati and has worked extensively on tribal communities of the country
Aruna Roy who had criticised PM Manmohan Singh for refusing to pay the beneficiaries of the MGNREGA in line with the Minimum Wages Act, had written to Sonia Gandhi requesting not to consider her for another term of the Council and result was that her request was accepted.
Some facts about National Advisory Council (NAC):
The NAC comprises prominent professionals chosen from diverse fields of development activity who serve in their individual capacities.
- NAC provides inputs in the formulation of policy by the Government and supports the Government in its legislative workings.
- NAC has a special focus on social policy and the rights of the disadvantaged groups.
- It must be noted that the term of panel has been made co-terminus with the term of the present government.
