India, Thailand to make trilateral highway ready by 2016
Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh who was on a visit to Thailand and Thailand PM Yingluck Shinawatra have expressed hope for the completion of the ambitious project to develop a 3,200-km highway connecting India, Myanmar and Thailand by 2016.
India has already granted Myanmar a loan of $500 million, a part of which will be used to fund the project.
Thailand informed India of the progress Thailand and Myanmar had made in the development of the Dawei Special Economic Zone in southern Myanmar. Once operational, the project would further enhance connectivity and open enormous business opportunities for the region.
Both nations have reiterated their commitment to push further the talks for a Thailand-India Free Trade Agreement.
