Mahant Prem Das, the Gaddi Nasheen of Hanuman Garhi, is set to break a centuries-old tradition by visiting the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on April 30, 2025. This visit has garnered attention due to its historical and cultural implications. The Gaddi Nasheen has never left the temple premises, a rule established in the 18th century.

Historical Context

Hanuman Garhi is a revered temple in Ayodhya, believed to have been established in the 10th century. It is said that Lord Ram entrusted Hanuman with the guardianship of his birthplace. The temple complex spans 52 bighas and functions under a strict constitution that prohibits the Gaddi Nasheen from leaving its premises. This tradition has been upheld for over 200 years, reinforcing the spiritual authority of the Gaddi Nasheen as Hanuman’s representative.

The Role of the Gaddi Nasheen

The Gaddi Nasheen, or chief priest, serves as the spiritual leader of Hanuman Garhi. His responsibilities include overseeing rituals and maintaining the temple’s sanctity. According to tradition, the Gaddi Nasheen can only operate within the temple grounds. When events occur, the Gaddi Nasheen sends Hanuman’s insignia, or chinnah, in his place. This practice puts stress on the belief that the Gaddi Nasheen’s physical presence is secondary to the spiritual representation of Hanuman.

The Decision to Visit the Ram Temple

The decision for Mahant Prem Das to visit the Ram Temple was made during a meeting of the Nirvani Akhara Panchayat. The council, consisting of about 400 members, deliberated on his request, which he attributed to divine intervention from Lord Hanuman. This unprecedented approval marks shift in the temple’s traditions and reflects a broader acceptance of change within the spiritual community.

The Procession and Rituals

The historic procession will take place on Akshay Tritiya. Mahant Prem Das will depart from the temple via a chariot adorned with Hanuman’s chinnah. However, upon reaching the Ram Temple, he will switch to a four-wheeler to comply with security protocols. He is expected to carry offerings, including 56 types of Bhog.
