INS Sunayna

On April 5, 2025, the Indian Navy launched the Offshore Patrol Vessel INS Sunayna as part of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative. This event took place in Karwar, Karnataka, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presiding over the ceremony. The launch signifies India’s commitment to regional maritime security and international cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It coincides with the 10th anniversary of the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative and the National Maritime Day.

IOS SAGAR Initiative

The IOS SAGAR initiative aims to enhance maritime cooperation among nations in the IOR. The launch of INS Sunayna involves collaboration with naval personnel from nine friendly nations including Comoros, Kenya, and Maldives. This reflects India’s dedication to encouraging peace and collective security.

Project Seabird Developments

Project Seabird has established modern operational facilities in Karwar, valued at over ₹2,000 crore. These facilities include marine infrastructure, an armament wharf, and residential units for sailors. The infrastructure supports the operational readiness of the Indian Navy and contributes to the local economy. More than 90% of materials used are sourced domestically, aligning with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Training and Collaboration

The mission of INS Sunayna includes providing training exercises for international crews. Activities will cover firefighting, damage control, and seamanship. This training enhances interoperability between the Indian Navy and partner nations. It aims to strengthen ties and promote a secure maritime environment.

Historical Context

The launch date holds historical significance as it marks the anniversary of India’s first merchant ship, SS Loyalty, which sailed from Mumbai to London in 1919. This coincidence marks India’s long-standing maritime legacy and its ongoing commitment to maritime leadership.

Future Outlook

INS Sunayna is expected to play important role in shaping the future of maritime security in the IOR. The mission will not only boost India’s naval capabilities but also enhance regional cooperation. The focus on collective security and shared interests is very important for the stability of the Indian Ocean.
