Consolidation of AYUSH Drug Standards Recommended by Committee

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has proposed consolidating all AYUSH drug-related standards under a single independent drug controller. This recommendation aligns with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. The committee aims to streamline processes and enhance the efficiency of AYUSH drug standardisation.

Formation of an Independent Drug Controller

The committee suggests establishing an independent body to oversee AYUSH drug standards. This body would coordinate with existing organisations like the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy and the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences. The goal is to ensure uniformity in drug quality and efficacy.

Enhanced Stakeholder Involvement

A key recommendation is to involve stakeholders in developing pharmacopoeial standards. This inclusive approach is expected to improve the overall quality of AYUSH products. Active participation from various stakeholders will help address diverse perspectives in the standard-setting process.

Expanding Outreach of AYUSH Initiatives

The committee has identified a need to increase the reach of AYUSH initiatives like Arogya Fair and Ayurveda Parv. Currently, the coverage is insufficient compared to India’s vast geography. The committee recommends targeting 50% of states in the upcoming year.

Awareness and Education Campaigns

The report emphasises the importance of effective communication strategies. The IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) scheme should aim to raise awareness about AYUSH systems, especially in rural and underserved areas. This will help in promoting preventive and therapeutic benefits of AYUSH practices.

International Cooperation and Promotion

The committee encourages collaboration with first-world countries to promote AYUSH among the Indian diaspora and local populations. This includes strategies for healthcare travel to India. The Ministry is urged to develop marketing campaigns to enhance AYUSH’s global presence.

Investment in Research and Development

Research plays important role in validating AYUSH practices. The committee recommends collecting data on safety and quality control. This evidence-based approach will support the efficacy of AYUSH drugs and therapies, encouraging public trust.

Focus on Human Resource Development

Developing skilled professionals in the AYUSH sector is essential. The ministry is advised to create strategies for human resource management. This will ensure a capable workforce to support the growth of AYUSH systems.

Collaboration with WHO

The establishment of a WHO Global Traditional Medicine Centre in Jamnagar is step. The committee supports increased collaboration with WHO to enhance global acceptance of AYUSH. This partnership can accelerate the growth of traditional medicine.
