Clinical neuroscientists have treated spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in a baby before birth. SMA is a genetic disorder affecting motor neurons, causing progressive muscle weakness. It has five types (0-4), classified by age of onset and severity. Symptoms include muscle weakness, especially near the body’s center, but do not affect involuntary muscles like the heart. It is caused by SMN1 gene mutations, leading to motor neuron loss. It affects 1 in 10,000 births and is a leading genetic cause of infant deaths.

Dalibor Svrcina of Czechia won the the men’s singles title in the Maharashtra Open Tennis Tournament 2025, defeating Brandon Holt of the USA. The final was held at Mahalunge Balewadi Stadium in Pune on 23 February 2025. The tournament, an ATP 100 Challenger event, took place from 17-23 February with a prize pool of $160,000.

The post-monsoon wildlife census began at Kalakkad Division of Kalakkad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR). It is located in the Southern Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu. It comprises Kalakad Sanctuary, Mundanthurai Sanctuary, and part of Kanyakumari Sanctuary. The reserve lies between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with the Agastya Malai Hill Range as its core area. It is part of one of the world’s 18 biodiversity hotspots.

The first International Conference on Carbon Markets-Prakriti was held in New Delhi on 24-25 February 2025. It brought together experts, policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and practitioners in carbon credit trading. The conference aims to understand and expand the Indian carbon market while discussing global carbon credit trends. It was organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Union Ministry of Power. The event was inaugurated by Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar.

Russia deployed RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) on combat patrol routes with nuclear warheads. RS-24 Yars (NATO: SS-29) is a Russian ICBM system that entered service in February 2010. It is similar in design to Russia’s SS-27 (Topol M) and Bulava (SS-NX-32) missiles. It is a three-stage, solid-fueled missile, launched from silos or mobile launchers. It has a range of 2,000–10,500 km and carries up to 10 nuclear warheads.
