Ex INS Guldar Transformed Into Underwater Museum

The Indian Navy has recently transferred Ex INS Guldar, a decommissioned Landing Ship Tank (Medium), to the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Limited (MTDC). This initiative marks a pioneering effort in India to convert a retired naval vessel into an underwater museum and artificial reef. The handover took place in Karwar, with MTDC assuming responsibility for the ship on an ‘as is where is’ basis. The project aims to promote marine conservation while creating opportunities for local communities.

About Ex INS Guldar

  • Ex INS Guldar was built in Poland and commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 30, 1985.
  • It served primarily in the Eastern Naval Command until 1995 and later in the Andaman and Nicobar Command until its decommissioning on January 12, 2024.
  • Over its 39 years of service, the ship participated in numerous operations, including Op Aman and Op Pawan, and successfully conducted over 490 beaching operations.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

The project aims to enhance marine conservation efforts. Scuttling decommissioned ships creates artificial reefs that support diverse marine life. These structures provide shelter and contribute to thriving ecosystems. Additionally, the initiative is expected to generate livelihood opportunities for coastal communities through underwater tourism.

Diving Training Opportunities

The project will also facilitate diving training for the Indian Navy at the scuttled site. This collaboration with MTDC enhances the Navy’s operational capabilities while promoting marine tourism in the region.

Other Marine Museums in India

India has seen the conversion of other naval vessels into museums. INS Kursura in Vishakhapatnam serves as an underwater museum, while INS Vikrant was operated as a museum before being recommissioned in 2022. INS Cuddalore has also been transformed into an underwater museum, further contributing to India’s maritime heritage.
