ITBP Establishes New Company Operative Base in Chhattisgarh
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has opened a new Company Operative Base (COB) in Kutul, Chhattisgarh. This area is a stronghold for Naxalite activity. The establishment of the COB aims to enhance security and reduce Naxalite influence in the Abhujhmad region. This region is known for its dense forests and hilly terrain, making it a challenging area for law enforcement.
Background of ITBP
- The ITBP was established in 1962 following the Sino-Indian War. It was created to guard the Indo-China border.
- Initially part of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), it became a separate entity under the ITBPF Act in 1992.
- The force is tasked with securing a 3,488 km border with China.
- It operates in high-altitude areas, with personnel trained in mountaineering and skiing.
Objectives of the New COB
The new COB in Kutul serves multiple purposes. It aims to deter Naxalite activities in the region. The ITBP believes that a stronger presence will instil confidence among local residents. This initiative aligns with Mission Kagar-2026, aimed at eradicating Naxalism in Chhattisgarh. The ITBP’s presence is expected to encourage local populations to engage with the mainstream.
Naxalite Presence in Abhujhmad
Abhujhmad is a remote and largely unexplored area. It encompasses parts of Narayanpur, Bijapur, and Dantewada districts. The region has been stronghold for Naxalites. Their activities have created a climate of fear among local communities. The establishment of the COB is intended to change this dynamic.
ITBP’s Role in Internal Security
The ITBP plays important role in maintaining internal security. It conducts counterinsurgency operations in various states affected by extremism. Its responsibilities also include riot control and election security. The force has been effective in restoring order in disturbed areas.
Disaster Management and Humanitarian Efforts
Beyond security, the ITBP is involved in disaster management. It has been the first responder in numerous crises, particularly in the Himalayas. The force has participated in rescue operations during natural disasters. Notably, it aided thousands during the 2013 Uttarakhand floods.
International Peacekeeping Missions
The ITBP also contributes to international peacekeeping. Personnel have been deployed in various countries under UN missions. Their roles include maintaining peace and security in conflict zones. This international engagement marks the versatility and capability of the ITBP.
