Bart De Wever was sworn in as Belgium’s Prime Minister by King Philippe on 3rd February 2025. He replaced Alexander De Croo, who led a seven-party coalition government. The June 2024 elections did not give a decisive mandate to any party or coalition. Belgium has a complex political system, divided into Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia. De Wever is the first nationalist Flanders leader to become PM.

Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved India’s first white tiger breeding centre in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The centre will be set up in Govindgarh, near Mukundpur’s white tiger safari. The project received in-principle approval in 2011. Rewa is believed to be home to the last wild white tiger. The centre is part of a revised masterplan for Mukundpur’s white tiger safari and zoo. The safari is named after Maharaja Martand Singh Judeo, who found a white tiger in 1951 and started a breeding program.

DRDO and IIT Hyderabad unveiled India’s largest metal 3D printing machine for rocket components. It was developed at the DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) at IIT Hyderabad. The machine uses Powder-based Directed Energy Deposition technology for additive manufacturing. It has a build volume of 1m x 1m x 3m, making it one of India’s largest metal 3D printers. The system features dual heads for thermal balancing and speed. A key milestone was achieved with the successful fabrication of a one-meter-high component, advancing large-scale additive manufacturing in India.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) restrained the Andhra Pradesh Government from proceeding with six infrastructure projects in Kolleru wetland. Kolleru Lake is a large, shallow freshwater lake in northeastern Andhra Pradesh. It lies between the Krishna and Godavari deltas near Eluru. It is Asia’s largest shallow freshwater lake, covering 308 sq. km. It acts as a flood-balancing reservoir and drains into the Bay of Bengal via the Upputeru River. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1999 and a Ramsar Site in 2002. It is an Important Bird Area (IBA) on the Central Asian Flyway, hosting species like Siberian cranes, pelicans, and painted storks.

The Union Finance Minister announced a five-year mission to boost cotton farming productivity and promote Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton. ELS cotton, known as the gold standard in textiles, comes from the Gossypium barbadense species, also called Egyptian or Pima cotton. It has fibre lengths of 30 mm and above, making it stronger and finer. Originating in South America, it is mainly grown in China, Egypt, Australia, and Peru. In India, it is grown in parts of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
