International Big Cat Alliance Officially Established
The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) was officially established as a treaty-based intergovernmental organization. This inter-governmental organisation aims to enhance global efforts in conserving big cats. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 9 April 2023, the IBCA commemorates 50 years of Project Tiger. Five founding countries signed the Framework Agreement, marking milestone in wildlife conservation.
Formation and Membership
The IBCA was created after the approval of the Indian Union Cabinet on 29 February 2024. The headquarters is located in India. Initially, five countries became formal members by depositing their instruments of ratification. These countries are Nicaragua, Eswatini, Somalia, and Liberia. Currently, 27 countries have expressed their commitment to join the alliance.
Objectives of IBCA
- The primary goal of the IBCA is to conserve seven major big cats – Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
- The alliance aims to unify conservation efforts across nations. It encourages collaboration among stakeholders to share successful practices and expertise in big cat conservation.
- Its focus areas include preventing illegal wildlife trade, financial and technical assistance and climate change mitigation.
Collaboration and Synergy
IBCA seeks to create a collaborative platform for stakeholders involved in wildlife conservation. This includes national and international organisations. The alliance aims to enhance the dissemination of best practices in big cat conservation. It also provides access to a central repository of technical knowledge and funding.
Financial Support and Initiatives
The IBCA plans to boost conservation agendas through financial support. It aims to halt the decline in big cat populations and reverse negative trends. The alliance will strengthen existing intergovernmental platforms and networks focused on species protection.
Impact on Global Conservation Efforts
With India’s leadership, the IBCA is positioned to make impact on global wildlife conservation. The alliance facilitates knowledge sharing and resource pooling among member countries. This unified approach is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by big cats worldwide.
Future Prospects
The IBCA envisions a future where big cat populations thrive. It plans to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on these species. By encouraging international cooperation, the alliance aims to secure ecological futures for big cats and their habitats.
