Sagar Island hosts the iconic Gangasagar Mela every January and is impacted by climate change. Sagar Island is located in the West Bengal. The island is also known as Gangasagar or Sagardwip. It lies in the Ganges delta on the Bay of Bengal’s continental shelf. The island consists of 43 villages and is separated from Mahisani Island by the River Muriganga Batala. Sagar, Mahisani, and Ghoramara islands fall under the sand group category. It is a significant Hindu pilgrimage site where Makar Sankranti is celebrated in honor of the Sun. The Kapil Muni temple on the island is a major attraction for devotees.

Shahu Tushar Mane won gold in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the National Shooting Championship, securing his first senior national title. Mane, representing Railways, triumphed in the 24-shot final by a narrow margin, defeating Telangana’s Dhanush Srikanth, who took the silver medal. Himanshu from Haryana won gold in the youth category, while Madhya Pradesh’s Yash Pandey and West Bengal’s Abhiav Shaw won silver and bronze, respectively.

Former Supreme Court judge V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the 9th Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for a three-year tenure until December 2027. Justice Ramasubramanian retired from the Supreme Court on June 29, 2023, after over three years, and was part of key cases, including demonetization and cryptocurrency regulations. He succeeds Justice Arun Mishra, with Acting Chairperson Vijaya Bharati Sayani leading the NHRC interim. NHRC investigates human rights violations, intervenes in related cases, and promotes research for human rights protection.

The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, and UNDP, in partnership with Citi Foundation, launched the 7th Youth Co:Lab National Innovation Challenge for 2024-2025. Youth Co:Lab, co-created by UNDP and Citi Foundation in 2017, focuses on empowering youth to drive Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through innovation and entrepreneurship. In India, it began in 2019 in collaboration with AIM, NITI Aayog, and has conducted six theme-specific youth innovation dialogues by 2024. The 2024-2025 edition, in partnership with AssisTech Foundation, emphasizes solutions enhancing opportunities for persons with disabilities in assistive technology, education, skilling, and inclusive care models.

National Consumer Day is celebrated annually on December 24 to mark the importance of the consumer movement in India. The day commemorates the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, which safeguards consumers against unfair practices and exploitation. Each year, Consumer Day focuses on specific themes addressing challenges in the evolving market. In 2024, it is celebrated in Delhi with the theme “Virtual Hearings & Digital Access to Consumer Justice.” The theme aligns with the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, emphasizing digital tools for speedy, cost-effective justice, including e-filing of complaints and digital platforms for consumer grievance redressal.
