Modi Receives Kuwait’s Highest Honour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently been awarded the Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer, Kuwait’s highest national honour. This recognition was presented by Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, which signifies strong friendship and goodwill between nations.

Significance of the Award

The Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer is reserved for foreign Heads of State and royal family members. Established in 1974, it commemorates Mubarak Al Sabah, ruler of Kuwait. Previous recipients include notable figures like Queen Elizabeth II and former U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The award’s design was revised in 1992, following Kuwait’s liberation from Iraq.

Modi’s Dedication of the Award

Upon receiving the honour, PM Modi dedicated it to the enduring ties between India and Kuwait. He acknowledged the contributions of the Indian community in Kuwait and the broader people of India. This visit marked a historic moment, being the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait in 43 years.

Historical Context of India-Kuwait Relations

India and Kuwait share a rich history characterised by friendly relations. Their partnership has evolved over decades, with trade and investment forming the backbone of their cooperation. The Indian rupee was legal tender in Kuwait until 1961, denoting the long-standing economic ties.

On the 2023-24 fiscal year, bilateral trade between India and Kuwait reached approximately $10.47 billion. Kuwait ranks as India’s sixth-largest supplier of crude oil, fulfilling about 3% of its energy requirements. Indian exports to Kuwait surpassed $2 billion for the first time, reflecting the growing economic relationship.

The Kuwait Investment Authority has invested over $10 billion in India, showcasing mutual trust and commitment. This investment is very important in strengthening the economic landscape between the two nations, encouraging further collaboration in various sectors.
