IPBES Nexus Report 2024

The Nexus Report, released by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), puts stress on the intricate connections between environmental, social, and economic issues. The report, developed over three years with input from 165 global experts, reveals that addressing these challenges in isolation often exacerbates the problems.

Interconnected Issues

Biodiversity loss, food and water insecurity, health risks, and climate change are interlinked. Efforts to tackle one issue without considering others frequently yield inconsistent results. For instance, improving water quality in Senegal also reduced the incidence of schistosomiasis, illustrating the benefits of integrated approaches.

Current Efforts Insufficient

Existing measures to combat these crises are inadequate. They fail to account for the complexity of the issues, leading to ineffective solutions. The report warns that without comprehensive strategies, the health of our planet will continue to decline, affecting food and water availability and overall human health.

Most economic activities currently harm nature, and the costs of these actions are often overlooked. Delaying decisive action could lead to irreversible damage, including species extinction. The report emphasises the necessity of recognising and addressing these economic impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Disproportionate Effects on Vulnerable Communities

The report marks that global crises disproportionately impact vulnerable populations. Individuals in developing countries, small island nations, and Indigenous communities suffer the most from biodiversity loss and climate change. Inclusive decision-making processes are essential to develop fair and equitable solutions.

The report warns that continuing current practices will worsen outcomes for biodiversity, water, and human health. Focusing solely on one issue, such as food production, may exacerbate other challenges. However, positive scenarios exist where sustainable production, ecosystem protection, pollution reduction, and climate adaptation can be pursued simultaneously, aiding the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
