Goa Celebrates 63rd Liberation Day
Goa recently commemorated its 63rd Liberation Day, on December 19, 2024, marking the end of Portuguese colonial rule in 1961, followed by 451 years of foreign domination. President Droupadi Murmu acknowledged the contributions of freedom fighters and the armed forces, expressing her wishes for a prosperous future for the people of Goa.
Historical Context of Goa’s Liberation
Goa’s liberation was achieved through ‘Operation Vijay,’ a military operation by the Indian Armed Forces in December 1961. This swift 36-hour operation effectively ended Portuguese control and integrated Goa into India. The event is very important in India’s post-independence narrative, as Goa was the last region to be liberated from colonial rule.
Role of Freedom Fighters
The struggle for Goa’s freedom was intertwined with India’s broader independence movement. Even after India gained independence in 1947, Goa remained under Portuguese rule until 1961. Many Goans participated in protests, inspired by the national movement. Mohan Ranade emerged as a prominent freedom fighter, leading armed revolts and enduring imprisonment for 14 years, including six years in solitary confinement.
Commemorations and Tributes
On the eve of Liberation Day, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant led a ceremony to honour the families of freedom fighters. He brought into light the importance of remembering their sacrifices and expressed gratitude for their bravery. The Chief Minister emphasised the hardships faced under Portuguese colonialism, which lasted nearly half a millennium.
Goa’s Cultural Heritage
Goa’s rich cultural and religious identity, shaped by centuries of Portuguese influence, remains a vital aspect of its heritage. Liberation in 1961 allowed Goa to embrace its unique culture within the Indian context. Chief Minister Sawant noted that Liberation Day is a celebration of both freedom and the state’s vibrant cultural history, reflecting the bravery and resilience of its people.
