Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS)

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) has achieved milestones by connecting all 17,130 police stations in India. This extensive network was completed recently, enabling law enforcement agencies to file and access crucial documents like first information reports (FIRs) and chargesheets across the country.

Background of CCTNS

CCTNS was initiated in 2009 with a budget of ₹2,000 crore. Its primary aim was to digitize police records and enhance the efficiency of law enforcement. The system has become vital for implementing new criminal laws introduced on July 1, 2024.

Features of CCTNS

The platform maintains comprehensive records of past and current crimes. which includes details about accused and convicted individuals, habitual offenders, missing persons, unidentified bodies, and stolen vehicles. Additionally, it generates statistical reports at the police station level, aiding in crime analysis.

Recent Updates to CCTNS

The National Crime Records Bureau has made 23 updates to CCTNS to align with the new laws. Key changes include requiring senior officer approval for certain arrests and notifying relatives about arrests. Police must submit daily reports to magistrates and employ forensic investigations for serious crimes.

New protocols mandate crime scene videography and the collection of biological samples when necessary. Authorities are required to inform victims about the progress of investigations within 90 days, ensuring transparency and accountability in the process.

Integration with the Criminal Justice System

CCTNS has expanded to connect police data with other criminal justice components, such as courts and forensic labs. This integration has led to the creation of the Integrated Criminal Justice System (ICJS), streamlining interactions among various agencies for improved justice delivery.
