Science and Heritage Research Initiative
Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister for Science and Technology, recently told the significance of integrating India’s traditional knowledge with modern technology, and aims to enhance India’s global standing as the nation approaches its centenary in 2047.
Importance of Heritage
India boasts a rich heritage, including nearly 5 million ancient manuscripts and iconic monuments. These historical assets provide a unique foundation for scientific innovation and modern solutions to global challenges.
Science and Heritage Research Initiative (SHRI)
The SHRI celebrates five years of projects that merge technology with heritage. Key initiatives include non-invasive preservation techniques, digitalization of the Ajanta caves, and artifact restoration. These projects exemplify how tradition can inform scientific advancements.
Government Initiatives
The government promotes traditional knowledge through various initiatives. The Ayush Ministry, Aroma Mission, and Hydrogen Mission illustrate efforts to blend ancient practices with contemporary science. The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library safeguards and shares India’s ancient wisdom for research purposes.
The Lavender Revolution in Jammu and Kashmir demonstrates the benefits of combining traditional practices with scientific methods. Furthermore, International Yoga Day has gained international recognition, celebrated in 190 countries, showcasing India’s potential to offer universal solutions.
Supporting Artisans and Livelihoods
Dr. Singh emphasised the need to connect scientific innovation with traditional crafts. The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Scheme provides support for artisans, ensuring that traditional skills remain economically viable.
New Technologies and Products
During the event, Dr. Singh launched several products developed under SHRI, including Kosh Shree, an online Sanskrit dictionary tool, and Sakshatkar, a coffee table book on India’s scientific contributions. Additionally, health-focused products like HerbaHeal Cream were introduced.
An exhibition showcased advanced technologies like an electronic jacquard for handloom weaving and a virtual reality project, Tales of Ajanta, aimed at digitally preserving heritage sites. A similar VR initiative for the Ellora Caves is in development.
