Background of SLINEX

SLINEX began in 2005 as a bilateral naval exercise, and has evolved to strengthen the maritime relationship between India and Sri Lanka. The exercise is crucial for encouraging mutual trust and collaboration in maritime security.

Structure of the Exercise

SLINEX 2024 consists of two distinct phases – the Harbour Phase and the Sea Phase. The Harbour Phase occurs from December 17 to 18. The Sea Phase follows on December 19 and 20. Each phase has specific objectives and activities designed to enhance cooperation.

During the Harbour Phase, participants will engage in professional and social activities. These activities aim to improve mutual understanding and strengthen interpersonal relationships among naval personnel. The focus is on building camaraderie and enhancing communication.

Sea Phase Activities

The Sea Phase will feature various joint exercises, include Special Forces operations, gun firings, and communication drills. Additionally, seamanship practices, navigation exercises, and helicopter operations will be conducted. These activities are designed to improve operational capabilities and coordination.

Participating Vessels

India will be represented by the Indian Naval Ship INS Sumitra, a patrol vessel from the Eastern Fleet. A Special Forces team will accompany the ship. Sri Lanka will contribute with SLNS Sayura, an offshore patrol vessel, along with its own Special Forces team.

The primary aim of SLINEX 2024 is to strengthen maritime cooperation. The exercise also promotes a secure, rules-based maritime environment. It reflects the commitment of both nations to enhance regional security and stability.
