Tourism Ministry Allocates ₹25 Crore for Big Temple Development
The Union Ministry of Tourism has allocated ₹25 crore for enhancing facilities around the Sri Brahadeeswarar Temple, part of the Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD) scheme under Swadesh Darshan 2.0. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) provided vital information about the planned upgrades.
Infrastructure Improvements
The project will focus on several critical areas including the redevelopment of the existing parking area and upgrades to the roads surrounding the temple. The moat and Rajarajan Park will be improved for a better visitor experience. Additionally, the lighting at the temple’s entrance will be enhanced.
Relocation of Facilities
The cloakroom and shoe storage will be moved. They will be positioned near the moat bridge for convenience, which aims to improve visitor flow and accessibility. Toilet facilities will undergo updates. Old buildings housing State government offices will be renovated. This will enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the area. The ‘girivalam path’ around the temple will be developed, to promote walking and enhance the spiritual experience for devotees.
Additional Redevelopment Projects
Bethanan Kalai Arangam will also see basic redevelopment. This venue is managed by the Thanjavur Corporation and Tamil Nadu Tourism Department. The Thanjavur Museum will be refurbished as part of the initiative.
Improvements will extend to the ‘Karikalan’ Walkers Path along the Grand Anicut canal. The funding includes provisions for training programs. These efforts aim to promote tourism in the Thanjavur region effectively.
