Himachal Pradesh’s Drone Stations for Disaster Management

Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced plans to establish drone stations across the state as part of a transformative project to enhance disaster management. This innovative approach aims to address climate change challenges effectively and the government has allocated ₹800 crore for this initiative.

Drone stations will function like bus terminals, and will facilitate quick aid delivery during emergencies. The stations will also monitor disaster situations in real time. This modern technology is crucial for efficient disaster response.

Home Guards’ Raising Day Celebration

The 62nd Raising Day of the Home Guards was celebrated at a state level. This event recognised the vital role of Home Guards in disaster response. CM Sukhu praised their dedication and announced a month-long public awareness campaign. The focus will be on educating citizens about disaster preparedness.

Recent Disasters in Himachal Pradesh

The 2023 monsoon season brought severe disasters to the state. Over 23,000 houses were damaged, with losses exceeding ₹10,000 crore. Rescue teams performed commendably during incidents like the Manali cloudburst. They successfully evacuated 395 stranded tourists under challenging conditions.

The government has merged the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) with the Home Guards. This merger aims to enhance coordination and efficiency in disaster management. Training 70,000 civilians as civil defence volunteers is also planned. This initiative will prepare 1% of the population for emergencies.

Investment in Modern Equipment

The government is investing in advanced equipment, including drones. These drones will aid in rescue operations and disaster monitoring. They will transport essential supplies like medical aid during emergencies. This strategy is part of the “Harnessing Technology for a Safer Tomorrow” initiative.

Supporting Women in Home Guards

The government is introducing 180 days of maternity leave for women in the Home Guards. Additionally, plans are in place to recruit 1,000 new personnel. Immediate recruitment will fill 700 of these positions.

CM Sukhu emphasised the importance of confronting climate change. He acknowledged the efforts of the Home Guards, SDRF, and Fire Services. These groups are essential pillars of disaster management in Himachal Pradesh.
