International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience

However, they are susceptible to damage and each year, around 150-200 faults occur globally. Common causes include fishing activities, anchoring, natural disasters, and equipment malfunctions.

Formation of the International Advisory Body

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Cable Protection Committee (ICPC) have established the International Advisory Body for Submarine Cable Resilience, which aims to enhance the resilience of submarine cables. It is crucial for the global digital economy.

Objectives of the Advisory Body

The Advisory Body focuses on promoting best practices among governments and industries. Its goals include improving cable resilience, minimizing damage risks, and expediting repairs. The group will also address increasing internet traffic, aging infrastructure, and environmental threats.

The Advisory Body consists of 40 members from diverse countries, which includes ministers, regulatory authority heads, and telecommunications experts. H.E. Minister Bosun Tijani from Nigeria and Prof. Sandra Maximiano from Portugal co-chair the group. They will meet biannually, starting with a virtual meeting in December 2024.

India is player in the global submarine cable network, which hosts 17 international subsea cables in cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Cochin. Major Indian telecom operators are involved in this infrastructure, enhancing India’s global communications role.

Despite their durability, they face growing challenges from environmental hazards and complex regulations. In 2023, over 200 repairs were reported, denoting these vulnerabilities.
