India and ADB Sign Loan Agreement For Water Security in Meghalaya
The Government of India has partnered with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and they signed a loan agreement worth $50 million, which aims to enhance water security in Meghalaya and also focuses on climate change adaptation for local communities.
Project Overview
The project will construct 532 small water-storage facilities across 12 districts and will collect and store rainwater. They will help manage heavy rainfall and mitigate water shortages during dry spells. Additionally, the initiative will develop 3,000 hectares for reliable irrigation.
Climate Data Collection
Fifty weather stations will be established to gather climate data. This information will support informed decision-making. Micro-irrigation systems will also be introduced in the Garo, Jaintia, and Khasi regions.
The project will incorporate renewable energy solutions. Micro-hydropower systems will be tested in three water storage facilities. This approach promotes sustainable energy use alongside water management.
Alignment with State Policies
The initiative aligns with the Meghalaya State Water Policy of 2019. This policy focuses on sustainable water resource management. It aims to reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks.
Master Plan Development
ADB will assist in creating a master plan for water harvesting systems. This plan will consider local needs and disaster risks. It will guide water security strategies at the village level. Local councils and committees will manage these strategies.
Capacity Building
The project will strengthen the capacity of Meghalaya’s water management agencies. Training will be provided to farmers, especially women. This training will cover techniques to improve livelihoods, including horticulture and fisheries.
ADB’s support extends beyond financial assistance. It includes technical expertise for integrating climate adaptation into water management. This promotes sustainable development in the region.
